On newsstands: Bedford Springs Featured in November Martha Stewart Living

3north’s extensive work at Bedford Springs Resort and Spa in Pennsylvania is featured in an 8-page article in the November 2011 issue of Martha Stewart Living. Although the monthly-magazine does not typically feature resorts or travel, after a memorable visit, editors convinced Martha Stewart to cover the resort and its incredible architecture, grounds and furnishings.

3north Principal David Rau led the restoration and renovation where 3north was responsible for the architecture, interior design, landscape design, furnishings and graphics packages. Among the numerous awards and honors the project received, the most noteworthy was the National Trust for Historic Preservation 2009 Honor Award.

Congratulations, 3north, on this well-deserved recognition.

How Tumblr Hired Its 3rd Employee, Or, The Luckiest Cold ‘Call’ Ever – The Atlantic

How Tumblr Hired Its 3rd Employee, Or, The Luckiest Cold 'Call' Ever - The Atlantic:

marc:

It was really great chatting with Alexis and Sarah from The Atlantic. The timing of their southern road trip meant they came through Richmond when the Tumblr Support office was closed, but they were really great sports about it. And, they move fast! We finished chatting a little before 3 p.m. and this was up just a few hours later.

Special props to Thomas Duffy for his dart board decorating skills!

Enjoyed our conversation with Sarah and Alexis today and we wish them much success in helping bring out some of the South’s technology gems over the next week.

The Atlantic #StartUpSouth Tour Begins in RVA

…not just in Richmond, but at the Corrugated Box Building in Manchester. The week-long #StartUpSouth tour from Richmond to New Orleans started with a tweet from The Atlantic’s senior editor, Alexis Madrigal upon his arrival with Sarah Rich, his co-author and fiancee:

#StartUpSouth: Tumblr’s Richmond office is dope

In their Road Trip Diary, Day 1, they write:

Our destination was the Corrugated Box Building, a huge, open space redesigned by the Richmond architects, 3 North…. Suffice to say that we were as impressed by the building as by the companies. The only bad thing that happened was that we had to leave because we’d budgeted a depressingly short stay in town.

In an earlier post, StartUp South: Richmond Introduction, they write:

When we hit town, we’ll actually be visiting the area across the river, in old Manchester, a formerly independent town that now has a thriving arts and culture scene along Hull Street. The Plant Zero Art Space provides an anchor for creative endeavors. Right around the corner sits the the Corrugated Box Building. It serves as a hub for tech businesses including a Tumblr office — the only one outside New York — and the company developing Tumblr’s mobile offering, Mobelux.

At CBox, Alexis and Sarah first met with Mobelux co-founders, Garrett Ross and Jeff Rock (pictured below) and followed up with this post: “The Guys Who Developed Tumblr’s Mobile App Want to Help Your Startup.”

They then talked with 3north principal, Scott Ukrop, about 3north’s design for the CBox building and its unique open and collaborative nature.

Alexis and Sarah then sat down with Marc LaFountain (pictured below), the head of Tumblr’s Richmond office.  Here’s a link to their posting: “How Tumblr Hired Its 3rd Employee, Or, The Luckiest Cold ‘Call’ Ever.”
