A quick excerpt from “The Scoop,” Style Weekly’s Email

TUMBLR ALL OVER: To the tech-savvy among us, Tumblr isn’t new. But Richmond is rediscovering the highly adaptable microblogging platform since it landed in our backyard recently, opening a new office in the Corrugated Box Building.

Last week Tumblr joined Fahrenheit Technology, Style Weekly and the VCU Brandcenter to present A Digital Affair, bringing the best of SXSW home to Richmond.

And earlier this week, the Social Media Club of Richmond used its monthly program to focus on Tumblr and how technology and fashion intersect for its monthly program. You can watch a replay of the event, including introductions by Style publisher Lori Collier Waran, on UStream.

Final Four CBox Update

From our resident Bracket Meister, 3north’s Danny Macnelly:

Wow.  The end of last week really did a number on everyone’s brackets.  The only people with any picks still alive are Cary “ie Eleison” McCutcheon and, of course, the only true believer among us.  Fred has VCU making it to the finals (though has them losing to Syracuse – Booooooooo), so can extend his lead, but he already has the pool won.  Going back through The Committee archives, we can’t find an instance where the pool was decided before the final weekend.  The only intrigue left is for second place, where our socialist/communist contingent remains, but Cary will pass them with a UConn win on Saturday.  Erin Webb took last place this year by an equally impressive margin.

And, though you lost, you still need to pay up.  Fred wants his money and you don’t want to see Fred get angry.

And, from all of us at The Corrugated Box Building: Go Rams! You’ve made us all proud!

CBoxers Hit the Road for Speaking Engagements

Besides routing on the VCU Rams as they prepare for the Final Four this weekend.  number of upcoming events include Corrugated Box folks out and about in the Richmond community:

  • Jeff Rock of Mobelux and Marc LaFountain of Tumblr will be part of a panel discussion Tumblr 101: It’s in Style for The Social Media Club of Richmond, Tuesday, March 29 at the Barksdale Theatre at Willow Lawn.  Sold out, but more info here.
  • Eddie Wilson, who works here with Mobelux and is UI designer for eddit inc., will be leading the AIGA Richmond Coffee Talk: Mobile App/Software Design at The Lunch Porter, Thursday, March 31 at 7:30 am. More info here.

Corrugated Box March Madness Update

3north’s Danny Macnelly brings the latest update on the Corrugated Box Official Committee for the Oversight of Office Wide Gambling Affairs (CBOCOOWGA) brings us this update. (To see the latest standings click here.)

FYI, I added in Susan Hogg’s picks just a few minutes ago since she entered a paper bracket last week, but I just now got around to putting it online.  I think you can all be sure [as evident by her #13 ranking] that we didn’t cheat.  I also added the president’s picks (surprisingly similar to our dear leader) and “favorites” which is how you’d be doing if you simply put in the higher seed to advance each time.

So far, David Rau (Tse Tung) holds the lead.  And the similarity of his picks to The Presidents only further puts into question the Obama’s questionable ties (first Khadafi, now a reincarnation of the infamous communist leader).  David also wanted me to point out that there is a message board that he would like you to visit so that he can continue to brag about his success thus far.  All I have to say is: Tortoise and the Hare, my friend.  I wouldn’t be napping around that corner, if you get my drift.  Here’s the message board, though if you want to be non-tech savvy about it you could, just reply all to the email.

Other than the time sensitive material, this is a better read for April 1:

We at the Committee would like to apologize for not giving our standard update in the initial email on the other Corrugated Box Official Committee for the Oversight of Office Wide Gambling Affairs (CBOCOOWGA, for short) events this year.  Most of you surely read the detailed accounts in the newsletter, of course, but we have been made aware that there are new members in the building that might not have received the last couple issues.

As you all surely know, there was some controversy at the Corrugated Box Biennial Baccarat Bonanza, and though David Rau “Tse Tung” was released from Committee custody last week for some alleged “slight of hand”, the committee is holding the funds pending a further investigation and will keep everyone updated on the progress. On a more positive note, The Annual Cockfighting Expo went off without a hitch.  3-time defending champ “Clucky McCluckerson” and his handler Susan “High on the” Hogg bested the field once again to retain the coveted Golden Comb.  Every year, the competition gets fiercer and we expect another competitive event next year.

As for the basketball pool, some of you might’ve thought that it was too late since they played a few of the games already.  But, in fact, we’re ignoring the early games (“first four” they’re calling it) and keep our usual deadline of NOON on THURSDAY, when the normal games start.   If you’d like to enter, just click on the link below.  You’ll need to register for an account at cbssports.com, but that’s pretty easy and painless.   Email me with any questions or if the link somehow isn’t working or if you’re having trouble with it.

And for those of you who don’t know much about college basketball, I’d point out that the people who know anything rarely win.  I think our last 3 winners picked at random based on jersey colors and mascots.

Corrugated Box NCAA Pool Info

Once again, 3north’s Danny MacNelly hosts the annual CBox NCAA pool. Here’s what Danny sent out on Monday the 14th to CBox tenants, family and friends:

Q:  Oh no, are you going to start barraging us with emails about the basketball pool again?
A:  Oh Yes, I am.

Q:  OK, but make it snappy, I’ve got work to do.
A: Me too.

Q:  You’re not very talkative today.  Is everything OK?
A:  It’s Monday.  I’m tired.  The kids kept me up all night.

Q:  Well, this is already taking too long.  Hurry up with the info.  I’m sure you’re aware that I minored in journalism back in college, so let’s hit the basics of the story and get out of here.  Who?
A:  This is for anyone in the building and anyone that those people might want to pass it along to (friends and family welcome).  Enter as many times as you like.

Q:  What?
A:  The NCAA men’s basketball tournament.  Come on, do we really have to do it this way?

Q:  Yes, I told you, I’m in a hurry.  Where?
A:  That one doesn’t really make sense for this.  Now you’re wasting my time.

Q:  When?
A:  Games start on Thursday at noon, so you’ll need to get your entries in before then.  There are games starting on Tuesday but we’re ignoring those – for example, if you pick VCU to advance (they play one of the play-in games), you’ll also get credit if USC advances in their place.

Q:  Why?
A:  This is stretching it.  I guess we do it for The Corrugated Box Building camaraderie?  That, or money.  $10 an entry, we’ll split the pot up 70%, 20%, 10% to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd places. And last place gets the entry fee back.  Points are given out as follows:
1st round:           1 point per game + the seed of the team
2nd round:          2 points per game + seed
Sweet 16:            4 points +seed
Elite 8:                   8 points +seed
Final 4:                  16 points + seed
Finals:                   32 points + seed

Q:  How?
A:  If you’re interested reply to this email and I’ll send the detailed instructions.  We’ll do it online, same as last year through www.cbssportsline.com though I’ll need to send you an invitation to get into our pool. Or, you can just fill out the paper bracket and hand it in if you can’t figure out the computer thing (though it would make my life easier for you to input it).  If you fill out the paper bracket, make sure give your name, affiliation (what company you work for) and your guess at the final score of the final game for tiebreaker purposes.

Q:  Did that cover everything?
A:  I think so.  And don’t worry, I’ll be emailing again soon.

Best,
Danny MacNelly

C3 Breakfast Features CBox’s Tumblr and Mobelux

C3's Chrystal Wake introduces Tumblr's Marc LaFountain at Crittenden Studio

C3 hosted another successful breakfast of Richmond area creatives on the morning of Tuesday, March 15 at the CBox Building. Marc LaFountain of Tumblr and Garrett Ross of Mobelux shared info on their companies and  the latest on social media technology.

3north’s MacNelly retains title in 2nd Annual CBBOOP

Following the annual Oscar’s ceremony, tenants and friends celebrated the Second Annual Corrugated Box Building’s Official Oscar Pool. Hosted by circle S studio‘s David McIntosh, participants were asked to do their best ‘Siskel & Ebert’ impersonations and choose the winners of this year’s Academy Awards.

McIntosh announced the top winners as the crowd snacked on signature ‘Red Carpet Cupcakes.’ Top honors went to repeating champion Danny MacNelly of 3north (with 20 of 24 correct), while second place was awarded to Tami Berry of circle S studio (with 18 correct). The award for the most incorrect went to Michelle Davis of circle S studio; Michelle was filming on location in Tanzania, so her award was accepted by David.

CBbox tenants know their films: 69% of participants were correct in choosing “The King’s Speech” as Best Picture, and 100% chose winner Colin Firth for Best Actor.
