Manchester Meltdown: Sweet relief for the cooking-impaired
by Brandon Fox

“We all want someone to do the cooking for us. Even those of us who love to cook don’t particularly love the endless planning, shopping and chopping the daily meal rotation demands. At the same time, it can be almost as much work to round up everyone who lives with you and pile into the car and get to a restaurant at a reasonable hour. Shoes can’t be found, territorial disputes break out over seating arrangements (in the car and at the restaurant), and, occasionally, someone cries.”

Savor the New

With the opening of savor on the ground floor of the ‘Box in early April 2008, Corrugated Box has fulfilled a critical part of its original big idea, which was to reach out and contribute to a vibrant, healthy working community within the historic Manchester District.

The new café, nestled in the 7th & Porter corner of the ‘Box and spilling out to porch tables, already has a loyal following in neighborhood businesses and friends. Chef Ellie Basch, well-known around Richmond for her culinary talents, her speedy marathon times, and her excellent adventures as coach for the Marathon Training Team, brings keen insight and exotic origins to the café: “I know how busy the Corrugated Box and other local offices can be during the week, so this is my opportunity to serve something delicious, light, and well-prepared right at their doorstep,” says Ellie, who grew up in Indonesia. Her cuisine combines the flavors and nuances of Asian and French traditions, and her healthy running obsession dictates consistently wholesome fare.

savor, which offers a full-service coffee bar, innovative breakfast and lunch menus, and take-home gourmet dinners, is open Monday thru Thursday 6 am - 5:30 pm & Friday 6 am - 4 pm.

3north’s David Rau Stars in Las Vegas

David Rau, who refers to himself as “the architect of last resort,” and whose mantra “o ye of little faith” is well-known to colleagues and clients, goes to Las Vegas in May to host a seminar at the 2008 Hospitality Design Expo & Conference. David, whose design solutions are guided by the discovery and expression of a project’s intangible qualities (IQ), will present his first annual I.Q. Report on Authenticity and Value in Hospitality Design, discuss the recently completed renovation of the venerable Bedford Springs Resort, and lead the seminar through one of his slightly wacky, but eminently productive IQ Charrettes. The HD Expo & Conference takes place at the Sands Convention Center May 14th - 17th, 2008. www.hdexpo.com
